2012 Summer Olympic Games – The Games and History

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad, will take place in London, England, United Kingdom, from 27 July to 12 August 2012.

London 2012’s ambition is to create a Games for everyone, where everyone is invited to take part, join in and enjoy the most exciting event in the world. 2012 Olympic Games also one the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

Following a bid headed by former Olympic champion Sebastian Coe and the then Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, London was selected as the host city on 6 July 2005 during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore, defeating Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris. London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948.

While budgetary considerations for the games have generated some criticism, they have also been welcomed by others as having prompted a redevelopment of many of the areas of London in which events are to be held – particularly themed towards sustainability. The main focus of the games will be a new 200 hectare Olympic Park, constructed on a former industrial site at Stratford in the east of London. The Games also make use of many venues which were already in place before the bid.

Lighting the Flame – Olympics Torch

A very precise ritual for the lighting of the Flame is followed at every Games. It is lit from the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional ceremony among the ruins of the home of the Ancient Games.

The Olympic Torch Relay is one of the strongest links between the modern Olympic Movement and the Ancient Olympic Games, and may be considered the second most important communications tool after the Games themselves. During the ancient Games in Olympia, Greece, a sacred flame burned continually on the altar of the goddess, Hera.

After a short relay around Greece, the Flame is handed over to the new Host City at another ceremony in the Panathenaiko stadium in Athens.

The Flame is then delivered to the Host Country, where it is transferred from one Torchbearer to another, spreading the message of peace, unity and friendship.

It ends its journey as the last Torchbearer lights the Cauldron at the Opening Ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, marking the official start of the Games. The Flame then stays lit until it is put out at the Closing Ceremony, signifying the end of the Games.

The relay will last 70 days, with 66 evening celebrations, six island visits with about 8,000 people carrying the torch a distance of about 8,000 miles (12,800 km), starting from Land’s End in Cornwall. The torch will have one day outside of the United Kingdom when it will visit Dublin on 6 June.
