Inspiring Datacentres from around the World
A datacentre is a large area that is used to store very large computer systems and their associated components, and can be used for telecommunications or data storage purposes. In this article, we take a look at a selection of some of the most impressive datacentres around the world.
Google Datacentre, Lenoir
Although any of Google’s many datacentres could be included in this article, the Google datacentre in North Carolina is as good an example of Google’s prowess as any. Over $600 million was invested into this particular datacentre, and it has since given back to the community by spending more than $1 on local schools and non-profits organisations. In terms of the datacentre’s PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness), a measurement used to define a datacentre’s efficiency, all of Google’s datacentres, including this one at Lenoir, have a PUE rate of just 1.12, meaning that Google’s datacentres are very efficient indeed.
HP Datacentre, Sydney
This particular datacentre is HP’s newest, and promises to be used to help deliver cloud services to HP’s users. The datacentre, named Aurora, is based just on the outskirts of Sydney and will be primarily used for domestic purposes, with this including used by the Australian government. The datacentre boasts a 500m2 raised floor, as well as a ventilation system that pushes hot air out into the aisles so that it can be sucked upwards towards the ceiling. The Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, Barcelona
This supercomputer centre, located in Barcelona, houses a very powerful supercomputer that goes by the name of MareNostrum, which is encased in the glass box you can see in the picture above. The datacentre was built in 2005 and can be found at the Technical University of Catalonia.
Capgemini Datacentre, Swindon
This particular datacentre, known as Merlin, can be found in Swindon in the United Kingdom. It can boast an area of ten thousand square feet as well as a PUE rating of 1.1, meaning that the datacentre is extremely efficient. Indeed, it is so efficient, that it is claimed that the datacentre is one of the most sustainable datacentres in the world.
EveryWare Datacentre, Zurich
Finally, we have the EveryWare datacentres, which can be found in Zurich. The EveryWare datacentre has two different datacentres that cover a combined distance of 1,500 meters squared, and have been providing safe, reliable data storage for over fifteen years, which is no mean feat. The datacentre is primarily used by clients in the banking and insurance, medical, and media sectors, and also offers clients a variety of services such as private rooms, private cages and server racks, as well as hardware management and disaster recovery services should the worst ever happen.
